What is Lyme Disease?

Lyme disease if left untreated can lead to serious health complications. At Newbridge, we specialize in Lyme disease treatment and we understand that this condition can take time to evaluate and for treatment to be effective. This is why we guide you through our holistic process utilizing functional medicine and provide you with the best care every step of the way.

What is Lyme Disease and What Can Be Done About It?

Lyme disease is often associated with tick bites that become infected. But the disease itself is caused by a spiral-shaped bacteria known as Borrelia burgdorferi

If Lyme disease goes undetected or untreated, chronic Lyme disease can develop. In addition, chronic Lyme disease may also manifest either because it isn’t fully treated, or because the immune system can’t fight the infection. This can often lead to significant physical and mental impairment.

Lyme disease can also cause you to exhibit a variety of psychological health problems such as:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Brain fog
  • Mood swings
  • Emotional lability
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Cognitive dysfunction
  • Issues with fetal brain development
  • Sudden-onset aggressiveness and violence

Lyme disease is often referred to as the “Great Imitator” because it resembles and mimics many other diseases, often leading to a misdiagnosis. For example, before Lyme disease was recognized, it was mistaken for juvenile arthritis.

Common Symptoms of Lyme Disease

The classic tell-tale sign that you have Lyme disease is a circular rash – often in the form of a bull’s eye – known as Erythema migrans. And because this rash is specific for Lyme disease, you can often receive a diagnosis without clinical testing. However, few people with Lyme disease recall a prior tick bite and, in up to 30 percent of cases, a rash doesn’t appear.

Other common symptoms of Lyme disease are:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Headache
  • Extreme Fatigue
  • Muscle and joint aches
  • Nerve pain
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Rash around the bite (Erythema migrans)
  • Meningitis
  • Heart palpitations
  • Loss of muscle tone on one or both sides of the face
  • Dizziness
  • Shortness of breath

Chronic Lyme Disease Symptoms

Lyme disease can become chronic either because it isn’t fully eradicated initially, or if the immune system can’t fully manage to fight the infection, which often leads to significant physical and mental impairment. Many of the symptoms of acute Lyme disease are similar to those of chronic Lyme, like joint pain and severe fatigue. However, Lyme disease can also cause more serious health problems in various body systems causing issues like:

  • Neuropsychiatric problems, like depression, anxiety, brain fog, mood swings, emotional lability, suicidal thoughts, and cognitive dysfunction.
  • Issues with fetal brain development in cases where a pregnant woman has Lyme disease
  • Sudden-onset aggressiveness and violence, are observed in some cases of Lyme disease and Lyme coinfections, particularly Bartonella
  • Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Immune dysfunction
  • Inflammation
  • Neuropathy
  • Cardiovascular symptoms

Lyme disease is often referred to as the “Great Imitator” because it resembles and mimics many other diseases, often leading to a misdiagnosis. For example, before Lyme disease was recognized, it was mistaken for juvenile arthritis.

Our Approach to Lyme Disease

At Newbridge Health & Wellness, our functional and integrative approach combines traditional and progressive therapies to provide treatment for Lyme disease. To begin, we utilize different types of Lyme tests (serological and molecular), depending on the history and timing of a patient’s onset of symptoms. To treat Lyme, we integrate conventional treatments like antibiotics, antimicrobials, and other prescription medications, along with treatments like herbs, neurotherapy, and nutrition to address the range of symptoms and to initiate and support whole-body recovery. This functional and integrative approach provides our patients with a path to lasting relief.

Immediate Care for Tick Bites

For patients who suffer a tick bite, we offer same-day or next-day appointments, Monday through Friday, non-holidays. It is important to treat a tick bite the same day if possible, but no longer than 3 days after the bite occurred to decrease the risk of long-term symptoms related to Lyme and associated co-infections.  Antibiotics are often recommended with new bites, and prescribing them does require an appointment.

Acute Tick Bite Action Steps

  1. Call (612) 730-2237 to schedule an appointment as soon as possible with a Newbridge provider to potentially get on antibiotics and start other treatments if necessary. Let your scheduler know you are calling because of a recent tick bite.
  2. If the tick is still attached, remove it NOW. Follow these steps to properly remove the tick with regular tweezers. If you have Tick Twister tweezers, follow these steps.
  3. Place the tick in a Ziploc bag. DO NOT DISPOSE. Save it and send it in for testing at tickreport.com.
